Pathology

Here's a vocabulary of PATHOLOGICAL terms you might hear during your studies...

Abscess: Pocket of pus built up under skin, or in/between organs


Aetiology: The cause of disease/condition (e.g. aetiological agent of disease)


Anaemia: Lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin (in RBCs). These carry oxygen.


Contiguous: Touching, next to


Hypoxaemia: Lack of oxygen in blood


Hypoxia: Lack of oxygen in tissues


Infarct: A necrotic lesion resulting from ischaemia


Infarction: Obstruction of blood supply causing ischaemic necrosis


Ischaemia: Shortage of blood flow/supply


Necrosis: Cell death in body tissues



Occlusion: Blockage (e.g. arterial occlusion, venous occlusion)


Ulcer: Sore/break in tissue
